Communion #13

Light. We need it. Without light we cannot see. I recently spent several days away in the country, and I quickly realised how much I rely on light. In the evenings, when I gazed out the window all I saw besides the occasional star was pitch black.

It is amazing to me that the sun is one big star, shedding light over the entire solar system. The light it has penetrates even to the underground animals that need the heat in the soil. So much of our planet relies on the power of this sun. Even the planets are being held in perfect formation by the gravitational pull toward the sun.

This should not be a surprise to us. The light from the sun is needed for all life. We need not force or convince our world to gravitate toward this light. It does so, because it relies on this light for survival.

There have been times where I have tried to strive in my own strength to be the light as Jesus once encouraged us to be. But because of Jesus' sacrifice, this light lives in us. Emanating to the degree with which we allow it to. It is not an act of striving. It is not something that can be forced or coaxed. This light, should we allow it to be seen through our weaknesses and our good deeds, naturally attracts all to it. Our objective is simply allowing this light to shine. Which often proves to be harder than we think it would.

And so we must remember to be grateful for this light that Jesus had to face the darkest of darks to make available to us. This light only exists in us, because He faced the darkness that we might not have to face this darkness ever again.
